Nestled in the northern region of Kafue National Park, McBride’s Camp offers an unforgettable safari experience. Our recent three-night stay at this remarkable camp was filled with unique adventures and top-notch wildlife sightings.
The Journey In: A New Road to Adventure
Reaching McBride’s Camp has never been easier, thanks to the newly constructed road that guides you through the park’s diverse landscapes. The 5.5-hour drive from Lusaka takes you through Moimbo woodlands to open grasslands, each turn revealing a new facet of Kafue’s rich biodiversity. The smooth ride set the tone for the adventure that awaited us.
Nature’s Bounty: A Tapestry of Vegetation
The area surrounding McBride’s Camp is a mix of vegetation, from the Moimbo Woodlands to the golden hues of grasslands dotted with dark termite mounds. This diversity not only enhances the visual appeal but also attracts an array of wildlife, keeping game drives interesting.
Springs of Delight: Hot and Cold Wonders
One of the camp’s unique features is its proximity to three cold springs and one hot spring. These natural oases are a testament to the untouched beauty of Kafue. On one memorable morning, we eagerly awaited our turn to dip into the hot spring, patiently letting a herd of elephants quench their thirst first. Swimming in the warm waters, surrounded by the sounds of the bush, was both relaxing and exhilarating.
Historical Exploration: Zambia’s Oldest Copper Mine
A short drive from McBride’s Camp took us to the ruins of Zambia’s oldest copper mine. This historical site features an old shaft, and for those with a keen eye, there are many interesting stones scattered around the area. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s mining heritage.
Comfort and Wilderness: A Home in the Wild
McBride’s Camp offers spacious campsites equipped with all the amenities one could need. Whether setting up a tent or lounging under the stars, we felt completely at home. Although we camped, McBride’s main accommodation is provided by seven private thatched chalets, each with en-suite bathrooms. Each chalet has a unique view, either of the river or on the dambo. A comfortable veranda allows one to view the many species of birds and wildlife from the chalet.
Wildlife Encounters: A Photographer’s Dream
Our cameras were always at the ready, and McBride’s Camp did not disappoint. While photographing a majestic male sable antelope, we witnessed a lioness attempting a hunt. Although the sable’s agility ensured its escape, the excitement of the moment will be etched in our memories forever. We also learned that there are resident cheetahs close to the camp, a treat as cheetahs are only found in Kafue and Liuwa Plains, in Zambia.
Game Drives: A Symphony of Sights
Our game drives at McBride’s Camp were exceptional. Elephants, lion, roan antelopes, sable, and an astonishing variety of birds graced our viewfinders. Bird enthusiasts will be delighted to know that we added four new species to our list, each sighting more breathtaking than the last.
Conclusion: An Unforgettable Safari
Our stay at McBride’s Camp in Kafue National Park was a journey of discovery and wonder. From the ease of access provided by the new road to the thrilling wildlife encounters and the tranquil springs, every aspect of our visit was perfect.
