Minister Of Tourism and Arts Jean Kapata has lifted the ban on hunting in the 19 hunting blocks with immediate effect. Ms Kapata made the announcement at a press briefing held at the Ministry of Tourism head office in Lusaka this morning.
She however said that the hunting will be conducted under laid down conditions and strict supervision from ZAWA. But that the ban on big Cats still stands. Hunting in the said blocks was suspended in 2013 due to inability to select outfitters in these blocks arising from a flawed process in the tender.
Hunting of Lions and other cats was banned on understanding that their populations were depleted to such low levels that it was not sustainable to hunt them.
She has also appealed to everyone to assist government and ZAWA in the conservation of the wildlife and its habitat in Zambia. She said that Zambia prides itself in having arguably the richest bio-diversity on the continent, which we all should guard against depletion..

UPDATE: Here is ZAWA’s response to this press release: https://www.zambiatourism.com/zawa-explains-hunting-ban-lift
And in case you do not approve my message i will spread it wide and far !! have no fear of that.
Thats just hideous and disgusting” Just shows what sort of people you are, i will never donate or offer support or visit your country and i urge people not to either!!! SHAME on you and your country. You will go down in history as the country that caused these animals to be extinct all in the name of greed . Disgusted at you all right now.
You say on this page–what “fantastic wildlife” Zambia has…so now you want to SLAUGHTER one of the Most Intelligent, Sensitive, Important animals that you rcountry was Blessed to have in its borders…???? I am DEEPLY UPSET by this decision to go back to Slaughtering elephants…when the science is showing–at the current rate of slaughter–they will be EXTINCT in 25 yrs. I will not be spending any of my tourist dollars in Zambia–until this is Reversed!!!
And all my Many friends will be given this horrendous news!
Please revoke your decision to lift the hunting ban. The ban must be reinstated on all animals especially elephants, this is our legacy ad Africans and must be protected. Americans mist nit be allowed to hunt on our continent.
Please, Please, in the name of who is most holy to you. In my case in the Most Holy Name of Jesus, please spare the elephants lives. Do not allow greedy men to kill them for the ivory or what ever other parts they want. God wanted to spare the animals or He would not have taken them into Noah’s Ark. Please DO NOT give in to senseless slaughter! I beg you!
Shame on you Zambia. Live animals bring long term tourism. Your wicked and greedy corruption Is an embarrassment to ecology and sustainability. Move in a forward direction and learn from your neighbors such as Botswana, where hunting is outlawed.
I am saddened that Zambia has made this decision. You are making a grave error, and I hope you will feel the consequences in reduced income from tourism. I will discourage any and ALL of my friends from venturing across the border into Zambia. I understand that there may arise human-wildlife conflicts, but if you decide on lifting the ban on elephant hunts in THIS DAY AND AGE, when one elephant is poached every fifteen minutes, when there are more elephants being hunted down and killed than than there are born every year, I can only draw a prejudiced conclusion concerning African stupidity. This is moronic behavior! Do you not see that you are wasting your natural resources? That once the elephants are gone, they are really and truly gone, and there is nothing you can do to reverse this?
Are you kidding me. They are facing extinction and you lift a ban on hunting. Shame on you. Stand up for what is right and not be greedyfor the money you make on these licences. You could make more on tourism than killing these animals. Pathetic
As you can see Zambiatourism… the lift on the hunting ban will have your company & other tourist companies suffer. What a foolish and outragous decision. Tell the govt to put the ban back now. Lifting the ban on hunting is absolutley insane! In other words to fund the ” conservation ” of elephants & other wildlife, they will sell permits to kill them. There are simply other ways to fund anything. I will not go to your country as long as this not reversed & I will make sure as many others as possible know regarding this and they will not go either.
This decision might be met with cheers by those with the deepest pockets but that’s a small population; photo safaris will bring far more dollars in the long run. As long as this ban is lifted, Zambia cannot be a must-visit destination except to those with blood on their hands. When the animals are gone, what then will the country have to lure us back? A foolish and cruel decision and I add my voice to the many others who are imploring you to reverse it. Please, these animals are iconic symbols of everything beautiful and wonderful of many of the African countries; why allow them to be shot down in cold blood only to hang on a wall somewhere….? Vanity and ego must not overrule compassion and reason!
Stop the killing of wildlife !!! Let tourist come and see the wildlife not hunt and kill the animals. It is shameful to allow the killing of your wildlife just for money when you can sell safaris for photography or watching just as well. You are depleting your national assets and then what will you sell?
You sold your soul to the dark side. You and your descendants are cursed in the eyes of God who prohibits what you have enabled.
It is sad how some people are unable to exercise self control. Melony C., I understand, you are angry and I am as well, but he way you express yourself defeats the purpose of what you are saying and you come off as being irrational and a bit crazy.
I see you sold your soul to Satan. May you and your descendants burn in hell for enabling the slaughter of these endangered species. Consider you and yours cursed. God is not on your side.
I am disgusted and appalled by Zambia\\\\’s decision to lift the ban on Elephant hunting! I will not visit Zambia while the terrible, immoral practice of trophy hunting is legal! Stop trophy hunting now and lead the way in showing other countries that you value these majestic animals your country has been blessed with!
Lifting the BAN on killing wildlife is a dumb move. There is a ban for a reason. Please put it back and NEVER EVER lift it back. The lives of the wild life depends on that. Animals feel too. How would it be if it was humans? They feel the same.
IF you truly pride yourself in “having arguably the richest bio-diversity on the continent”, then STOP HAVING IT SLAUGHTERED! You ALREADY allowed the killing of THAT many big cats that it doesn’t even pay off to organize massacre trips to kill even more of them – is it THAT what you want for ALL of your wildlife, including already constantly decreasing elephant populations???
Please promote saving our animals rather than killing them off and selling them to whoever shoves money into your pockets! How would you feel if murder had to be legalised and your family was killed. Set the bar down, Elephants shouldn’t be hunted for fun or any reason. Elephants are part of the pride of Africa, they are intelligent and majestic and deserve to just as much as you and I do. Let them be. Please. Reinstate the ban permanently. Love them. #speakingforthosewhocan’t #please #elephants #ZAWA
You are absolutely mad to allow the hunting of elephants. A huge, huge mistake. You will lose many possible tourists because of this.
STOP ALLOWING THE HUNTING OF YOUR NATURAL RESOURCES. YOU WILL HAVE NOTHING TO OFFER ONCE ALL OF IT IS GONE – MEANING NO TOURISM.
The ban on elephant hunting MUST remain. NOT to be lifted. Protect this species. DO NOT destroy!
