A joint operation between the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, African Parks Network and the Barotse Royal Establishment has seen 2 000 herbivores moved between two major national parks to ensure Zambia’s continued biodiversity.
Conservation teams have successfully translocated 1 650 wildebeest and 300 zebra from Liuwa Plain National Park to Kafue National Park. Liuwa Plain’s 336 000 hectares of untouched grasslands are home to Africa’s second-biggest wildebeest migration after the Maasai Mara and Serengeti. The park is also up for IUCN World Heritage Site status.
In another carefully planned operation, 50 Lichenstein’s wildebeest have moved from the Mulobezi Game Management Area to Liuwa Plain, marking the first time in 30 years that this rare grazer is now present. Both Kafue and Liuwa Plain offer superb game watching for safari goers especially during the midyear dry season.
