TIME + TIDE KAKULI
High on the Luangwa River’s bank, Kakuli is defined by its wide views and the constant movement of life along the water. Its name means old buffalo bull, a nickname locals gave to Norman Carr.
Kakuli has five bright, airy safari rooms, including a two bedroom, two bathroom family safari room. Each is positioned to make the most of the panorama, with a feather top bed, indoor and outdoor showers, and a covered open air seating area where you can settle in and watch the day unfold. The main lounge sits above the river and a permanent lagoon, offering a front row view as animals come down to drink. It is the sort of place where you pause, breathe, and take in the scale of the valley.
From camp, safari days move easily between game drives and walking safaris. The area is known for strong predator viewing, with a resident lion pride and regular leopard sightings. At certain times of year, the riverbank also hosts a seasonal colony of carmine bee eaters, bright flashes of colour against the green.
In the emerald green season, the Luangwa shifts character. Boat outings and walks bring you closer to the water’s edge and open up some of the best opportunities for wildlife and landscape photography, with clear light, dramatic skies, and scenes that reward patience.

Time + Tide gives you space to slow down and be present. Reconnect with nature, yourself and those you love in some of the world’s most untouched places, and feel fully alive.
Our legacy?Time + Tide was created for those who feel drawn to wild, remote places. We pioneered luxury safari and island experiences with a long standing commitment to responsible tourism, offering the rare luxury of space: time to step back from the constant pace of everyday life and simply be present.
Our collection spans land and sea in pristine locations, shaped by exceptional teams who share these destinations with care, respect and a deep understanding of place. As a family owned business, our culture is the foundation of our brand. Everything we do is guided by four pillars: community, conservation, sustainability and local economies, ensuring our work supports both people and wilderness for the long term.
Our story brings together decades of passion across Zambia and Madagascar. In the 1950s, Norman Carr pioneered walking safaris in Zambia’s South Luangwa Valley. In the 1990s, the Liebenberg family chose to showcase the Chongwe River in the Lower Zambezi Valley. Later, the Peyre and wider Dalais family set out to protect and share northern Madagascar’s extraordinary archipelago through sustainable ecotourism, with Miavana at its heart and, more recently, Tsara Komba in the Nosy Be archipelago.
Time + Tide was built on a dream of safeguarding rare places through thoughtful travel. Each location we work in needs biodiversity protection and stronger, alternative economies that value natural heritage.
We focus on immersive experiences that connect guests to the landscapes and communities around them, while working alongside local partners, NGOs, authorities and conservation organisations to support lasting protection. Still pioneering, still exploring, our story continues.
