Project Description
KAFUNTA RIVER LODGE
Overlooking a game-rich floodplain adjacent to the Luangwa River and the South Luangwa National Park, Kafunta River Lodge is one of the best wildlife viewing parks in Africa. From the central lounge and dining area, shaded by an ancient mango tree, guests can enjoy nature and the wildlife in comfort. Guests can relax around the campfire and share stories about their game drives or enjoy a candlelit meal and refreshing drink on the spacious wooden deck.
The lodge consists of 8 private chalets on raised wooden platforms with thatched roofs and 2 luxury suites which feature balconies with panoramic views and luxurious bathrooms. The tastefully decorated and comfortable chalets and suites all have verandas facing the floodplain where guests can experience the view in private. In late 2023 Kafunta also opened The Sunset House, a private three-bedroom safari accommodation designed for families and small groups.
Kafunta River Lodge has its own pontoon which allows guests to cross the river to the more remote areas of the park, away from other tourists. The pontoon is operatioinal from late April until the end of the dry season. Their highly qualified safari guides are intimately familiar with the park and have extensive knowledge of the African flora and fauna which they will share with you on an exciting game drive or walking safari.
Kafunta River Lodge has a beautiful infinity pool and also features a unique natural hot spring, both complete with magnificent views over the plains and river: a lovely way to relax after brunch or to end an eventful day. The lodge also features a small spa for massages, and a photographic hide looking out onto the floodplains.

Kafunta Safaris is an owner-run safari business and the owners, Ron & Anke Cowan, have been in the Zambian safari industry for more than 25 years. Kafunta River Lodge was opened in 1998 and is the Cowan’s home.
Many of the staff who helped to build the lodge were trained in other roles and still work at Kafunta River Lodge or one of our satellite camps Three Rivers Camp and Island Bush Camp as part of the Kafunta team. Today, Kafunta Safaris employs 40 to 70 staff.
Kafunta Safaris prides itself on providing a warm welcome and personalised service to our guests. We pay attention to the details so that our guests can relax and enjoy their dream African safari. Kafunta Safaris recognises the importance of responsible tourism and the need to protect this unique ecosystem and support the community.
Kafunta Safaris supports three local programs: Conservation South Luangwa, a non-profit community-based organisation committed to conservation; Project Luangwa, a charity set up to help local communities to improve their long-term economic prospects; and Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust, an NGO focused on teaching local youth about the importance of wildlife and conservation.
