KAFUNTA RIVER LODGE
Overlooking a game-rich floodplain on the edge of the Luangwa River and South Luangwa National Park, Kafunta River Lodge offers exceptional wildlife viewing in one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations. From the central lounge and dining area, shaded by an ancient mango tree, guests can relax in comfort while watching wildlife move across the plains. Evenings are spent around the campfire, sharing stories from the day’s safari, or enjoying candlelit dinners and sundowners on the spacious wooden decks.
The lodge features eight standard chalets with traditional thatched roofs and spacious patios, along with two luxury suites that accommodate up to four guests and offer generous bathrooms. All accommodation is tastefully decorated and designed for comfort, with private verandas overlooking the floodplain, allowing guests to enjoy the scenery and wildlife in complete privacy. More recently, Kafunta introduced The Sunset House, an exclusive three-bedroom safari retreat ideal for families or small groups seeking a more private stay.
Kafunta River Lodge has its own pontoon, providing access across the Luangwa River to more remote areas of the park, away from busier safari routes. The pontoon operates from late April through to the end of the dry season. Highly qualified and experienced guides lead game drives and walking safaris, sharing their deep knowledge of the region’s wildlife, ecology and landscapes.
Guests can unwind at the lodge’s infinity pool or soak in its unique natural hot spring, both offering sweeping views over the river and surrounding plains — perfect for a restful afternoon or a relaxing end to the day. Additional facilities include a small spa offering massages and a photographic hide overlooking the floodplain.

Kafunta Safaris is an owner-run safari business and the owners, Ron & Anke Cowan, have been in the Zambian safari industry for more than 25 years. Kafunta River Lodge was opened in 1998 and is the Cowan’s home.
Many of the staff who helped to build the lodge were trained in other roles and still work at Kafunta River Lodge or one of our satellite camps Three Rivers Camp and Island Bush Camp as part of the Kafunta team. Today, Kafunta Safaris employs 40 to 70 staff.
Kafunta Safaris prides itself on providing a warm welcome and personalised service to our guests. We pay attention to the details so that our guests can relax and enjoy their dream African safari. Kafunta Safaris recognises the importance of responsible tourism and the need to protect this unique ecosystem and support the community.
Kafunta Safaris supports three local programs: Conservation South Luangwa, a non-profit community-based organisation committed to conservation; Project Luangwa, a charity set up to help local communities to improve their long-term economic prospects; and Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust, an NGO focused on teaching local youth about the importance of wildlife and conservation.
