Shenton Safaris have been contemplating a renovation of Mwamba Bush Camp in South Luangwa National Park since about 2020 but were concerned about altering the essence of such an iconic camp that is beloved by repeat guests the world over.

After a week-long strategy session in camp in June 2023, the team finalised a carefully thought-out plan that will balance upgrades to the guest experience while preserving all that makes Mwamba special.

A key change will be the use of strong mopane wood around the grass bathroom walls to discourage the resident elephant – aptly named Dennis the Menace! – from ‘joining’ guests as they shower outdoors, especially when the wild fig trees are in fruit. Dennis is not leaving Mwamba; guests are just going to have more privacy and fewer wandering trunks when they’re rinsing off. The outstanding beauty of the camp will be also retained as will the natural colour palette.

The camp-building team have departed now that the December rainy season has arrived and will return once the rains allow in 2024. The ‘new’ Mwamba Bush Camp is slated to open in mid-June 2024. Sister camp Kaingo will reopen as usual on 19 May 2024.
