Livingstone comes alive again as it hosts the Livingstone 2013 Festival. Situated right next to the majestic Victoria Falls, or as the local Zambians call it “Mosi-oi-a-Tunya” (the Smoke that Thunders) is the exuberant town featured in the National Geographic Traveller 2013 Hot List as a “must see” destination. Livingstone 2013 is an international arts, culture and sporting event which celebrates the Scottish explorer, David Livingstone’s Bicentenary from 19 March 2013 (Livingstone’s actual birthday) to 16 November 2013 (when Livingstone first viewed the Victoria Falls).

Livingstone 2013 combines fun, sun and of course, a dip in the Zambezi with sports, arts, culture and community development. The event offers a chance to experience traditional Zambian culture through dance and the performing arts while also enjoying outdoor activities. Neighbouring countries are invited to participate in activities ranging from theatre to street theatre; traditional dance to live bands; soccer and 7-a-side rugby to cycling and fishing. Multiple-day events will be hosted on the Zambezi and be sure to check out the photography/art competition of the Victoria Falls and exhibition.

More information on the activities offered at the event can be found on the Livingstone 2013 Events Calendar

Livingstone 2013 invites all to take part in celebrating David Livingstone’s commitment to exploration, medicine, education and eradication of slavery while promoting education, science, geography and medical development in Africa. The festival encourages medical trade between Livingstone and Scotland, and the exhibitions are organised by the National Museums of Scotland.

The main objectives of the festival include:

  • Education packs, including fundraising for the Anglican Street Children’s Project
  • Cultural exchange between schools/universities in UK/Zambia
  • Academic conference on David Livingstone Royal Geographical Society
  • Sponsorship and partners programme
