Large New Family Unit Coming to South Luangwa!

Travelling in groups or with parents, children and grandchildren all together is getting more and more popular. A new private safari house – earmarked to open in September 2023 – will be able to accommodate up to nine people in three en suite bedrooms, a boon for multi-generational families.

It will be set a short distance away from Kafunta River Lodge on the banks of the Luangwa floodplain. Named Sunset House for the site’s unbeatable views, it promises to ‘perfectly balance relaxation and adventure’ with spacious living areas, three comfortable en-suite bedrooms, and a private swimming pool.

Meals will be taken on the deck or around the fire after a thrilling day of game drives and bush walks (for guests over 12).

Building in Green Season

Anke and Ron Cowan, the owners of Kafunta Safaris who built the River Lodge in 1998, marked out the footprint in December 2022 and excavations for foundations soon began. As everyone knows, this is slap-bang in the middle of rainy season but foreman Levy and his team have made considerable progress.

The two buildings that make up Sunset House will have solid back walls, large front mesh windows and canvas roofs, giving that ‘in a tent’ feeling while maximising comfort.

Sleeping up to nine guests

The two units – one with two en suite bedrooms and the other with a single en suite bedroom – can be configured in multiple ways. If three couples are travelling together, each can have a bedroom with a double bed and their own bathroom.

If parents, grandparents and teenagers are on safari, each can also have an en suite bathroom with younger children sleeping on convertible daybeds.

Sunset House will have its own pool and fireplace, and all guests will be able to stroll over to the main lodge to use the Fig Tree Spa, natural thermal hot tub and photographic hide.
