Owners Jess and Jake da Motta have put their 29 years of passion and experience in Luangwa’s tourism and hospitality sector towards making upmarket accommodation more accessible to both local and international travellers. Located on the border of the South Luangwa National Park, Flatdogs Camp prides itself not only on being competitively priced for all types of travellers but by striving to keep as much of the camp’s operations as natural as possible.
Before Flatdogs grew to what it has become today, the campsite was run on rented land. Jess and Jake da Motta’s dream to open up South Luangwa to more travellers became a reality when they were offered a piece of land by a Chief in the area, enabling them to build on their offering.
We caught up with the camp’s owners, Jess and Jake da Motta, to find out how Flatdogs Camp aims to do ‘more than just its bit’ for the Luangwa community…
Flatdogs Camp, South Luangwa National Park
By Jess and Jake da Motta
We understand that we’re all really ‘visitors’ here, so our camp is kept as natural as possible. As a result, large numbers of game find themselves quite at home wandering through the Flatdogs territory! Birdlife is prolific in our riparian woodland habitat – there’s nothing quite like being woken up in your canvas tent by the dawn chorus… The riverfront itself has not been developed in an effort to minimise any disturbance to the ecology, but visitors remain free to sit quietly under shady trees along the riverbank and watch the game go peaceably by.
We have tried to create a warm and friendly atmosphere in the camp, our staff get to know all the guests while they are here, it’s a place where both friends can be made and safari dreams come true! We would rather invest in having the best safari guides who fully appreciate this wildlife haven and the whole ecology of the Park than provide gold taps!

Flatdogs Camp Safaris & Activities
Safari activities take place in the same game-viewing areas as other lodges in Luangwa and although guests are not allowed in the park itself they’re as close as it is possible to be!
Flatdogs Camp prefers more people to be able to experience the magic of the Luangwa Valley, so we try to keep prices down and therefore attract a better class of people to enjoy our Safaris!
We have made Flatdogs the most ‘family friendly’ camp in the Luangwa. This means we have a pool, plenty of space for children and a children’s menu in the restaurant at children’s chow times. Children are not merely tolerated at Flatdogs….. we actually like having them! A nanny/watchman service is also available for when it’s grown ups’ playtime.
At Flatdogs we aim to offer a little piece of the true Africa with a few of the more useful inventions of the modern world! But don’t panic – we are blessed with lots of room so if you prefer to listen to the sounds of the wild, you can. Flatdogs is all about the freedom of choice!
