Gorongosa Restoration Project visit the Lower Zambezi

This month, CLZ hosted the team from the Gorongosa Restoration Project in Mozambique. This followed on from the visit by CLZ’s operations staff and ZAWA area warden earlier this year. The two parks are building a relationship to share experiences and expertise in wildlife protection.

From Gorongosa, Mateus Mutemba (Park Warden), Pedro Muagura (Director of Conservation) and Rui Branco (Park Vet), spent five days in the Lower Zambezi, finding out about CLZ and ZAWA’s wildlife protection work. The Gorongosa Restoration Project looks to rebuild their park back to its former status and one of Africa’s richest game areas – including reintroduction, environmental education, community, agriculture, health, research and wildlife protection programmes.

The team from Gorongosa spent time with CLZ’s Operation’s team and ZAWA’s Lower Zambezi team observing patrol strategies, systems and how the effort is monitored through CLZ and ZAWA’s wildlife protection collaboration.

The Gorongosa team visited communities in the area and were able to see some of the work that CLZ is doing in the community firsthand  – a chilli fence demonstration, visited one of the felumbus (brick granary stores designed by Awely), and interviewed the felumbu owners to better understand CLZ’s work in the community. The trip was a great success – thanks to the Gorongosa Team and we look forward to continuing the mutually beneficial relationship!

img5Valley Classic 2014

It’s that time of year again, when the Lower Zambezi’s finest catch-and-release anglers came together to put their rods in the water for CLZ. Wildtracks once again hosted the Valley Classic Fishing Competition and raised 27,000 ZMW for the cause.
The day saw some crazy outfits, great team spirit and ended with Zambezi Breezers taking overall first place. CLZ’s very own team came in second place, thanks to Wildtracks’ Mike Kapini joining the team and bringing his Zambezi River expertise with him! CLZ would like to give a huge thanks to Wildtracks for their incredible organisaion and hard work organising the event and for all the teams for coming along and supporting the event in which much organization and hard work went into. Thank you!
