Day 1 – 4: Chongwe River Camp, Lower Zambezi National Park
Your safari will begin by checking into your flight from Lusaka International Airport to the Lower Zambezi. On arrival at Royal Airstrip you will be met by your transfer guide who will take you to Chongwe River Camp, where you will check-in and freshen up for your first afternoon activity of your choice.
Wildlife is excellent, and one can expect to find large herds of buffalo and elephant, as well as some local predators. Elephants are in abundance here and are often seen at the river’s edge right in front of the lodge. Birdlife here is excellent as the river provides a source of food for a variety of birds including kingfishers, fish eagles, owls, storks, bee-eaters, and many other riverside water birds.
Meals: Full board, including local drinks
Day 4 – 8: Kakuli Bush Camp, South Luangwa National Park
After a final morning activity and a hearty breakfast, you will board onto a scheduled charter flight and head to South Luangwa National Park in the Eastern part of the country. On arrival at Mfuwe airstrip you will be met by a representative from Norman Carr Safaris who will transfer you to the Kakuli Bush Camp. This tented camp stands out high on a raised section of the river with magnificent views of the landscapes.
The area around camp is excellent for game viewing with regular sightings of cats and wild dogs. Luangwa is also home to some Zambian endemic species which include Thornicroft giraffe, Cookson’s Wildebeest and Crawshay’s Zebra. Birdlife is excellent, and photographers can keep an eye out for the intra-African migrant carmine bee-eaters which nest in the banks of the Luangwa River between August to November.
Enjoy daily game drives in the park in search of predators or enjoy a walking safari with an expert guide with a focus on some of the micro life inhabiting the area; it’s often overlooked when on a game drive. Luangwa is bucket list destination for any wildlife traveller.
Meals: Full board, including local drinks
Day 8: Departure
After breakfast you will make your way to the Mfuwe airstrip for your final transfer and your onward travel arrangements. Should you want to add on an extra few nights in Livingstone to view the Victoria Falls, or spend some time birding on the Zambezi River, this can be arranged as an add-on package.
Chongwe River Camp, Lower Zambezi National Park
Renowned for its breath-taking scenery and incredible wildlife, Zambia’s Lower Zambezi Valley is home to Chongwe River Camp. This magical place is at the confluence of the mighty Zambezi and Chongwe Rivers, and opposite the renowned Mana Pools National Pool.
The camp offers nine, comfortable, en-suite tents dotted along the Chongwe River with wonderful views of the escarpment in the distance. The tents are complemented by two, exclusive suites which boast the luxury of individual butler services, and private plunge pools.
Guests can enjoy day and night drives, boat cruises, walking safaris or canoeing – which provides the opportunity to view wildlife from a more natural perspective.
Kakuli Bush Camp, South Luangwa National Park
Kakuli is a seasonal bush camp that offers some of the best game viewing and night drive safaris in Zambia.
There are four spacious, traditional safari-tents under shady thatched roofs, each with an open-air bathroom and a sitting room. All the tents overlook the river with stunning views up and down this hippo-packed stretch of the Luangwa. A thatched canopy over a wooden deck overlooks the grazing lawn that leads down to the two rivers, and is a perfect spot in which to relax and watch the river and the wildlife go by.
Safari activities from Kakuli will usually be a mixture of game drives, boating and walking.
